Car rental in Poland for Ukrainians is available through BLS's Polish operation, including its Warsaw branch. Before booking, check your driving licence, payment method and return arrangements. A successful online payment does not necessarily confirm that every document or card will be accepted at pickup. Your current residence or protection status can also matter when determining which rules apply to a Ukrainian driving licence.
This guide explains how to prepare for collecting a rental car in Poland, compare the complete cost and agree on your route. It also separates three different arrangements: driving within Poland, taking a car across a border and returning it in another country. The advice concerns private journeys in a passenger car, not permission to use a rental vehicle for taxi work or other commercial services.
Documents to check before renting a car in Poland
Tell the rental company your age, driving experience, licence-issuing country and intended vehicle category before making a non-refundable payment. Ask for confirmation of the requirements for that specific booking. A minimum age, licence-holding period or deposit advertised by one supplier should not be treated as a rule for every rental in Poland.
- Proof of identity. Confirm which document the company accepts and prepare your passport for an international journey.
- A valid driving licence for the vehicle category. Bring the physical original. Do not assume that a document displayed in an app will satisfy a particular pickup procedure.
- Evidence of your current status, where relevant. This can matter if you rely on the special recognition rules for people covered by temporary protection.
- An accepted payment and security method. Check the card type, cardholder name and available funds or credit for both the payment and any deposit.
- Your booking confirmation. Keep the collection address, times, contact details and agreed terms available offline.
Include any additional driver in the request. A travelling companion having a valid licence does not automatically make them an authorised driver under your rental agreement.
Can you rent a car in Poland with a Ukrainian driving licence?
A specific EU recognition rule applies to valid Ukrainian licences held by people enjoying temporary protection, or the corresponding national protection covered by EU legislation. Under Article 3 of EU Regulation 2022/1280, those licences are recognised in the Union while that protection applies. Member States must not require a certified translation or an international driving permit in those circumstances, although additional documents may be requested to verify identity.
Recognition of your entitlement to drive is separate from a rental company's checks on age, experience, identification and payment. If you book through an intermediary, obtain confirmation from the supplier that will actually hand over the vehicle, rather than relying only on a general booking website statement.
What if you are visiting, have a different status or have lost your licence?
Do not automatically apply the temporary-protection exception to a tourist visit, another residence basis, an expired document or a lost licence. Check recognition or exchange requirements with the competent Polish authority, then confirm the supplier's pickup requirements. A PESEL number is not a driving licence.
Check your current status rather than assuming that a document issued in the past settles the question. These can be relevant when your licence recognition depends on a protection arrangement.
Rental price, security deposit and excess are different
The rental price pays for the agreed hire period and services. A security deposit secures obligations under the agreement and may be held rather than spent; its release depends on the agreed process and final settlement. The excess, also called a deductible, is your specified contribution towards a covered claim. It need not match the deposit and is not a universal limit on liability where exclusions apply.
Do you need a credit card? Is no-deposit rental available?
The answer depends on the booking. A debit card accepted for online payment is not necessarily accepted for a security hold at the desk. Ask whether your card type is suitable, whether the physical card must be in the main driver's name and whether another arrangement is available. Do this before paying, not after arriving to collect the car.
If an offer says “no deposit”, ask which vehicles and rates qualify, whether any paid package is compulsory and what responsibility remains with the renter. No deposit does not mean that damage, missing fuel or other contractual obligations disappear. Equally, do not assume that cash payment is available without confirmation.
The European Consumer Centre Poland's car-hire guidance distinguishes a supplier's reduction of liability from an intermediary's excess-reimbursement product. With reimbursement, you may need to pay a charge first and claim it back afterwards. Buying that product does not automatically remove the supplier's deposit requirement.
How to compare the total car rental cost in Poland
Compare offers using the same dates, pickup and return times, vehicle category and expected distance. For a week or a month, request a total-period quote instead of multiplying a headline daily rate. Treat a refundable security amount as a funds-availability requirement, not automatically as a final travel expense.
- Hire charge and taxes: the complete amount for the agreed period.
- Mileage: the included distance and charge for extra kilometres, if a limit applies.
- Fuel or battery level: the return requirement and how any shortfall is charged.
- Collection and return: whether your chosen location and time involve delivery, one-way or out-of-hours fees.
- Extras: an additional driver, child seat, selected protection and other equipment you actually need.
- Changes: cancellation, extension and late-return arrangements.
For city use, consider parking convenience and vehicle dimensions. For a family journey, check whether the boot fits your cases and pushchair with all required seats occupied. A high passenger capacity does not guarantee enough luggage space. For longer routes, estimate the entire trip distance, including local journeys, before comparing mileage allowances.
What to check in the insurance and protection package
Ask for the covered events and exclusions, not just a package called “full insurance”. Clarify damage and theft protection, the treatment of glass, tyres and wheels, the excess for each applicable event and the countries covered. Also check which reporting steps are required after an incident.
Save the assistance contact before leaving. Understand how to report a breakdown, obtain approval for recovery and arrange any repair. In an accident, prioritise people's safety and contact emergency services when needed, then follow the agreed notification procedure. Do not assume the company will reimburse a repair you independently commission without required approval.
Collecting a rental car in Warsaw

Confirm the exact collection address, time and handover arrangement. A booking showing “Warsaw” does not automatically include delivery to any station, airport terminal or hotel.
For an incoming flight or train, provide your arrival details and ask what happens if it is delayed. Confirm how long the reservation will be held, how to contact the representative and whether collection outside normal opening hours is possible. Allow time to reach the agreed pickup point rather than scheduling handover at the exact arrival time.
For central-city journeys, check planned stops against Warsaw's official Clean Transport Zone information. Entry requirements depend on the vehicle and the current stage of the restrictions. Confirm the actual car's relevant specifications instead of relying on a model name alone.
Cross-border car rental versus an international one-way journey
Permission to drive a rental car out of Poland is not permission to leave it abroad. Confirm each country, the applicable protection, any documents and fees, and the final return point before booking. A permitted international route and an international one-way rental are separate arrangements.
- Domestic Polish rental: collection and return at agreed locations in Poland.
- Cross-border journey with return: travel abroad is approved, but the car must come back to the contracted return point.
- International one-way rental: collection in one country and final return in another, explicitly agreed in advance.

That service does not automatically establish availability in the reverse direction from Poland to Ukraine or allow return in any other city. Inspecting the car and documenting the return
- Compare the vehicle with the handover record. Check bodywork, glass, wheels, interior and ordered equipment. Ask for existing defects to be recorded.
- Take your own photographs. Capture the overall condition, existing marks, odometer and fuel or battery level. Keep the original files.
- Confirm the return process. Know the address, time, key handover and inspection arrangements, especially for an unattended return.
- Document the vehicle again when returning it. Keep the acceptance confirmation, relevant receipts and correspondence.
- Follow up on settlement. Ask when the supplier releases a deposit hold; the bank's processing also affects when funds become available. Request an explanation and supporting documents for an unclear deduction.
A booking enquiry you can send in English
If you are contacting an English-speaking rental desk, include the Ukrainian licence and residence-status questions explicitly. This avoids receiving a quote that does not address your pickup circumstances.
I need a car from [date and time] to [date and time], collecting at [location] and returning at [location]. The driver is [age], with [years] of driving experience and a Ukrainian driving licence valid until [date]. My residence/protection situation is [brief description]. There will be [number] passengers and [luggage]. The route includes [countries], approximately [distance] km. I intend to use [card type/payment method]. Please confirm document acceptance, route permission, the total price, deposit, excess, mileage allowance and cancellation or amendment terms.
A description is enough for the initial enquiry. Do not send full card details or unnecessary document copies to an unverified account. Agree on an official channel before supplying any required personal documents.
The right rental offer should make the documents, cost, responsibilities and end of the journey clear before you pay. Once those points are confirmed, pickup can focus on checking the vehicle and getting ready for the road.
