How to rent a car in Ukraine: what you need

Updated on 15 October 2026.

To rent a car from BLS in Ukraine, prepare your passport and valid driving licence. Ukrainian customers also need their taxpayer number. International customers should confirm in advance whether an International Driving Permit is required for their licence. Most passenger cars require a minimum age of 21 and two years of driving experience; some classes and Prime have higher requirements.

BLS Car Rental is a Ukrainian car rental service operating since 2007. This guide explains the steps for self-drive rental in Ukraine, from checking your documents to returning the vehicle.

BLS confirms vehicle availability, the total cost and the terms of your booking before the agreement is completed.

Documents for Ukrainian and international customers

Ukrainian customers. Prepare a passport or national ID card, a valid driving licence and their Ukrainian taxpayer number, which is included in the BLS document checklist. Originals are required for the rental; confirm the accepted document format before collection.

International customers. Prepare your passport and valid driving licence. Before confirming a booking, tell the BLS manager which country issued your licence, the vehicle you would like and your rental dates. Confirm whether you need an International Driving Permit and which original documents to bring to collection. Settle these questions before paying or travelling to the collection point.

For a business rental, BLS may also require company documents and proof that the driver or representative is authorised to act for the company. Confirm the exact list with BLS before completing the agreement.

Who can rent a car from BLS?

The minimum age and driving experience depend on the vehicle class and rate. For most passenger cars, drivers must be at least 21 years old with two or more years of driving experience.

Vehicle or rateMinimum ageMinimum driving experience
Most passenger cars on standard terms212 years
VIP cars and convertibles on standard terms232 years
Trucks255 years and the appropriate licence category
Prime rate for eligible vehicles253 years

Check the BLS renter requirements before booking. If another person will also drive, tell BLS in advance: their documents and authorisation to drive must be checked and recorded in the agreement.

Base vs Prime: mileage, deposit and insurance

Mileage depends on the rate you choose. Base includes a limit of 250 km per day. Prime offers unlimited mileage regardless of rental duration. Booking for four days does not automatically make Base unlimited. This distinction is also explained in the current BLS rental FAQ.

What to compareBasePrime
Mileage250 km per day; excess mileage is charged under the booking termsUnlimited, regardless of duration
Standard security depositAmount depends on the vehicleNo standard deposit for vehicles eligible for the rate
Amount held for potential finesSettlement is governed by the agreementA separate amount applies; confirm the amount and release procedure when booking
Insurance protectionBasic third-party liability and comprehensive motor insuranceExtended cover under the package terms

The deposit and rental charge are separate amounts. Before paying, confirm the accepted payment method, the deposit or card hold, possible deductions and the release procedure. Renting without a standard deposit does not remove every other security amount or all financial responsibility.

BLS vehicles have compulsory third-party liability insurance and comprehensive motor insurance, known in Ukraine as OSCPV and KASKO. These do not guarantee cover for every loss. Extended insurance cover may reduce your financial responsibility, subject to the agreement. Check the insured events, exclusions and reporting procedure before signing.

How to book: five steps

  1. Choose the city, dates, times and collection and return locations. Allow time to inspect the vehicle.
  2. Select a vehicle class and car suited to your passengers, luggage and route. Availability of a specific model must be confirmed for your dates.
  3. Compare Base and Prime, your expected mileage, insurance protection and the funds required at collection.
  4. Add the options you need and confirm the full price, advance payment, amendment and cancellation terms.
  5. Obtain booking confirmation and check the collection address, meeting time and required documents.

Start by checking vehicles for your dates in the BLS car catalogue.

The price depends on the vehicle, duration, rate, collection location and options. Address delivery, collection outside office hours, child seats and One-Way returns may cost extra. Confirm the availability and price of additional services for your booking. Mention a return in another city or an additional driver in advance.

What to check when collecting the car

Read the agreement before signing. Make sure you understand the rental period, payments, mileage allowance, permitted territory, insurance terms and return requirements. Inspect the car together with the BLS representative.

  • Record existing scratches, dents and other damage in the handover report; take photos or video.
  • Check the fuel level, odometer, interior, tyres and glass.
  • Confirm the keys, vehicle documents and any equipment you ordered.
  • Adjust your seat and mirrors and familiarise yourself with the controls before driving.
  • Keep the support contact details and your copies of the agreement and handover report.

Completing a car rental agreement

Can you take the rental car abroad?

You may take a rental car outside Ukraine only with prior written approval from BLS. Agree the countries, route, documents, insurance and vehicle use conditions before travelling. A confirmed booking or comprehensive insurance alone does not authorise a border crossing. Check the territorial restrictions in your agreement for journeys within Ukraine too.

What to do after a breakdown or accident

Stop safely, look after the people involved and contact BLS on +38 067 329 26 26. Call the appropriate emergency services if anyone is injured or urgent assistance is needed. Record the circumstances when safe and follow the instructions of BLS, the police and the insurer.

Do not independently authorise repairs or towing without contacting the company unless immediate action is necessary for safety. BLS Assistance 24/7 can help coordinate the next steps. The help available, replacement vehicle arrangements and costs depend on the circumstances and agreement.

How to return the vehicle

Return the car at the agreed time and location. Contact the manager in advance if your plans change: an extension needs approval, and a late return may incur an additional charge under the agreement.

BLS supplies the car with a full tank and requires it to be returned with a full tank. Missing fuel is subject to an additional charge under the agreement. Remove your belongings and return the keys, documents and equipment. Record the vehicle condition, mileage and fuel level with the representative in the return report. Confirm the final settlement and the procedure for refunding the deposit or releasing held funds. Bank processing and the payment method can affect when funds become available.

Frequently asked questions

Can you rent a car without driving experience?

Most BLS vehicles require at least two years of driving experience for self-drive rental. Some classes and Prime have higher requirements. If you do not qualify, discuss a chauffeur-driven car with the manager.

Can you rent without a deposit?

Prime is available without a standard security deposit for eligible vehicles. A separate amount for potential fines after the rental still applies. Confirm its amount and release procedure before paying.

What do you need for a company rental?

The driver's documents and the company documents agreed with BLS. Check the authority of the signatory and driver before confirming the booking.

Can someone else drive your rental car?

An additional driver must be approved by BLS and included in the agreement. Their licence, age and driving experience must meet the requirements for your vehicle and rate.

Before confirming, check four essentials: your documents, the total funds required, mileage and return conditions.
